A $5.4 billion win for EA heading into the new financial year
In the first quarter of the 2023 financial year, Electronic Arts announced solid financial results thanks to its live service games. Over 70 percent of EA's net bookings came from live services, or approximately $5.4 billion, during the last year. As a result, the company's live service offerings have grown by 20 percent.
FIFA Mobile broke quarterly records as the top performing live service offering. Additionally, Apex Legends Mobile has outperformed all expectations for the title, though no specifics were provided.
The CEO of EA, Andrew Wilson, said the company remains committed to creating amazing experiences that inspire new generations to play, watch, create, complete, and connect.
According to CFO Chris Suh, the company had a strong quarter. "The success of the FIFA franchise and F1's launch drove our net bookings outperformance again this quarter," he said. Investing disciplined and executing well across our wide range of games and live services will fuel our long-term growth.
While live service games are becoming more popular, EA is still committed to producing single-player games. As part of the quarterly earnings call, leadership reaffirmed the importance of single-player titles for the publisher in the future.
In the last quarter, EA's player network reached new heights with almost 600 million active accounts. The average number of players engaged in FIFA Ultimate Team increased by almost 40 percent on a daily and weekly basis.
