Sony has decided to skip this year's Gamescom

Games are popular during the summer months, both for kids and adults. New games are released, and E3 kicks off the summer game show season.

The situation is a bit different this year. E3 2022 was canceled, and Gamescom is still planned, although certain big publishers may not appear or announce anything.

An official for Sony confirmed that PlayStation will not have a presence at the show. Sony is the latest major publisher to announce its absence from Gamescom 2022.

The move comes as a bit of a surprise since there are still some big releases coming to the PS5 in 2022, as well as other games in the pipeline for 2023. However, this is not the first time the company has made such an announcement.

The official announcement from Sony confirms that Activision blizzard, take-two interactive, and Nintendo will not be attending the Gamescom.

While fans might have been eager for announcements about these major releases during the event, there's no need to worry. All three of these publishers have major releases in the works.

PlayStation and Nintendo have both revealed games on their terms for some time now. Simulcast internet streaming allows gamers to learn all about the latest games on their consoles by watching the Nintendo Direct and the State of Play, without having to attend a live event.

Although Nintendo still has several major releases in store for this year, there was no Nintendo Direct at Summer Games Fest, though a Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Direct is on the way.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, it's clear that game developers and publishers are avoiding major events like these. One factor has been the change in the landscape of in-person conferences and meetings.

The possibility of the world returning to normal by this year's major game events may have led some publishers to avoid creating presentations and demos of their latest games, fearing an unexpected cancellation would negate their hard work.

Some publishers may also decide to pull out of events like these as a result of major publishers withdrawing. The number of viewers can decline for each major publisher who skips an event, which impacts all publishers that do decide to hold presentations or release demos.

While there will still be several major game events planned for the rest of the year, it remains to be seen whether things will return to normal or whether 2022 will see a major reshuffle in how games are announced and detailed.
