As one of the most well-received superhero movies in history, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is no surprise that the upcoming sequel is so highly anticipated. Miles Morales returns in Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, facing off against the most powerful villain they've ever seen.
Jason Schwartzman will be voicing The Spot, in this sequel, who is set to be at least one of the villains, among other notable additions to the cast. Here we break down who The Spot is, as well as his history in the comics. After all, this is The Spot's first appearance in the Spider-Verse movie universe.
Dr. Jonathan Ohnn, also known as The Spot, was a scientist who worked for Kingpin and was assigned to find a way to mimic Cloak's radiation levels. He succeeded in his mission, which was to replicate his powers. One night, he opened a black portal, but doing so drained the city's power and caused a blackout, making it unstable.
He discovered that this place was also surrounded by portals, so he returned through one he first came out of. He found on the other side that he had undergone a shocking transformation, where the portals from the other dimension had clinged to his body, leaving him with black spots all over his body.
In the first confrontation with Spider-Man and Black Cat, he ended up holding them off and warned them that Kingpin should be avoided. Once he realized the spots were portals through space, he became confident that he would be able to defeat anyone with these powers.
By passing through the Spotted Dimension and coming out of another 'spot', Ohnn's spots can transport both people and things to another place. His spots allow him to teleport himself and even extend parts of his body over long distances as well. Ohnn can use these abilities to his enemies strategically.
Additionally, Ohnn claims to be immortal because, even if his body gets wounded, he can disintegrate, then reattach himself to the Spotted Dimension. As the Spot only draws from what is on his body, he does not have an unlimited supply of spots, so if he runs out, he risks being overtaken. When Spider-Man has a mostly spot-free body, he can defeat The Spot easily.
In the new Spider-Verse movie, it's unclear what The Spot's role will be since he's not one of Spidey's most famous villains. In any case, the black-and-white visual aesthetic of the Spider-Verse movies perfectly suits the character.
A comic book character named The Spot works for Kingpin. This also links to Into The Spider-Verse's plot in which Kingpin was trying to find a way to cross dimensions to find his wife. Even though The Spot started as Peter Parker's adversary, he has lately been associated with Miles Morales, so he fits in perfectly with Spider-Verse, where Morales is one of the series' main characters.
Although the Spot is not as well known as the other Spider-People at the moment, all of these small details make him appear perfect for this next Spider-Verse installment. This newest appearance may bring him out of obscurity.
