Its various iterations and forms have made Sonic the Hedgehog one of the most longstanding video game franchises. It's no secret that Sonic the Hedgehog fans have stood by it through thick and thin, but not every take on Sonic has been successful in terms of execution.
The 2006 soft reboot titled Sonic the Hedgehog, or Sonic 06 as it's commonly known now, is perhaps the most controversial entry in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.
Sonic 06 is still a game with a fair number of fans, but it has been panned across the board for its bizarre narrative choices and borderline unfinished nature.
According to Takashi Iizuka, the head of the Sonic Team, two important rules are involved in making a Sonic the Hedgehog game, along with an unofficial rule that Sonic will never kiss humans again, according to Iizuka.
In fairness to Iizuka, he has been instrumental in the design of most Sonic the Hedgehog titles, beginning with Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but not in Sonic 06. In light of Sonic 06's negative reception, Sonic kissing humans isn't the only thing Sonic Team wishes not to happen again.
As a whole, Iizuka's two official rules are more in line with Sonic's character. Since Sonic is prone to going fast, Iizuka says that the first rule of Sonic the Hedgehog games are 'speed.' However, Sonic cannot swim as the second rule.
The second installment in Sonic's movie franchise was met with great financial success, and it will be interesting to see what the future holds for Sonic the Hedgehog. The upcoming release of Sonic Frontiers, Sonic's first venture into open-world gameplay, will be another exciting development.
